Grand Canyon vacations can be about a lot more than a few days spent at the canyon. There are the red rocks of Sedona, the history of Tombstone, the ski hills of Flagstaff and much more. To learn more about nearby sightseeing attractions for your next Grand Canyon adventure and family road trip, keep reading.

Red Rocks in Sedona, AZ

In Arizona's high desert and just a few hours south of the Grand Canyon lies the red rocks of Sedona, AZ. While the city's main attractions are its incredible rock formations and scenery, it's also a community steeped in arts, Native American culture and spirituality.

The town, a popular tourism destination, is home to world-class spas, golf courses and businesses dedicated to exploring what many believe to be “spiritual vortexes,” or centers of energy created by the rocks. Subsequently, the city is also a Mecca for alternative medicinal practitioners.

Tombstone, AZ

Good Grand Canyon vacations aren't complete without a side trip visit to historic Tombstone, AZ. Dubbed “the town too tough to die,” Tombstone is an infamous mining camp that once embodied the spirit of the wild West.

Today, Tombstone's historic buildings have been preserved and there are tonnes of activities for wild West enthusiasts. Gun fight shows, saloon performances, wagon tours, and museums are all available and lots of family for the traveling family. The town is a long drive away, about 6 hours, but makes a nice day trip from Phoenix.

Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, AZ

Arizona is home to some of the world's largest and most renowned observatories, though the majority are located in the far south of the state. Flagstaff's Lowell observatory is just a couple hours from the Grand Canyon.

Kids can look through their historic Lowell telescope, watch information sessions on star formations and learn about astronomy. They're open every day from 9 to 5, and then in the evenings on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Remember, Grand Canyon vacations can offer so much more than a day or two exploring the majestic canyon. Arizona is a state with hundreds of micro-climates, unique plant life and a steeped history. So, get your family in the car this summer and start exploring.
