Michigan Family Vacation:

Family Vacation Fun in Michigan

When people think about going on vacation, a Michigan family vacation might not be something that springs immediately to mind—vacations tend to inspire images of lying on a tropical beach, going to a theme park with mice mascots or taking a cruise.  Michigan, however, is a fantastic place to take a family vacation.  It has museums, theme parks and zoos.  There is plenty to do in Michigan, even lying on the beach: you can sun yourself on the shores of Lake Michigan, one of the nation’s Great Lakes!

Traditional Family Vacation Spot: The Zoo

Michigan has many zoos—zoos being the epitome activity of a Michigan family vacation: the Binder Park Zoo, the Detroit Zoological Park, the John Ball Zoological Garden and the Potter Park Zoological Gardens.  The biggest and most impressive zoo of the zoos in Michigan is definitely the Detroit Zoological Park.  This zoo has more than twenty five hundred animals and a great variety of plant life as well.  This zoo has a “penguinarium” and the largest polar bear exhibit in the world—the Arctic Ring of Life.

Family Vacation Staple: National Parks

There are some really great national parks in Michigan, which makes the Michigan family vacation another fun getaway idea.  The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a national park that spans seventy three thousand acres on the shores of Lake Superior.  There are lighthouses, Coast Guard life-saving stations and even old orchards and farmsteads to explore.  This is a “fully functional” national park, with hunting, camping, winter activities, nature studies and hiking trails available to fulfill all your Michigan family vacation needs.

Theme Parks: Michigan Family Vacation getaways

Usually when people think of theme parks, they think of parks with amusement park rides, roller coasters and costumed characters wandering about.  The Crossroads Village and Mott Children’s Farm theme park, however, takes another direction: this is a theme park that embraces the lifestyles of the turn of the twentieth century.  There are more than thirty historic buildings and even a carousel from 1912.  You can also take a paddlewheel riverboat ride on the Genesee Belle.

Every family needs to take a good “old fashioned” family vacation—pack the kids in the car, play the state license plate game and head off for a weekend of fun and culture.  The Michigan family vacation can be packed full of activities—theme parks, nature and zoos—all staples of the family vacation.
